The Green Port Certification programme is a pioneering initiative that recognizes and rewards ports that demonstrate a steadfast commitment to environmental, sustainable practices, and continual improvement. This programme aims to promote eco-friendly operations, reduce the environmental footprint of ports, and encourage responsible business practices in the maritime industry.

The Green Port Certification is designed to acknowledge and encourage ports that exhibit a strong dedication to environmental responsibility, sustainable operations, and ongoing improvement.

The process of transforming ports from traditional to green is complex and time-consuming, influenced by a range of factors including management decisions, technological advancements, financial feasibility, and market pressures, which can vary significantly from one port to another.

To recognize and distinguish between ports at different stages of their sustainability journey, three certification levels have been established:

GREEN PORT - LEVEL 3 – ‘ACHIEVER’: Representing the highest level of environmental commitment and achievement.

GREEN PORT - LEVEL 2 – ‘PERFORMER’: Recognizing ports that have made significant progress in their sustainability efforts.

GREEN PORT - LEVEL 1 – ‘BEGINNER’: Identifying ports that are just starting their green transformation journey.

Centre of Excellence on ESG & Circularity (Mumbai Port Sustainability Foundation) has signed a MoU with Mumbai Port Authority and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited for the development of a Green Fuel Ecosystem at Mumbai Port. The primary reason for this MoU is to facilitate collaboration and cooperation among the parties to develop a sustainable and environmentally friendly fuel ecosystem at Mumbai Port. This initiative aims to reduce the port's carbon footprint, promote the use of green energy, and create a circular economy.

An MoU was done with DNV for strategic technical cooperation in areas of decarbonisation, emission management, digitization and maritime safety.

MPSF signed a MoU with Bharat Petroleum Corporation for the development of a green fuel ecosystem, conversion of diesel-powered vessels to LNG powered, EV charging stations for general public and port users at Mumbai Port.

For Improving Environmental Sustainability in Major Ports a MoU has been signed between Mumbai Port Sustainability Foundation and Indian Ports Association. The objectives of this MoU are to work together to reduce the environmental footprint of port operations, promote sustainable practices, and enhance the overall environmental performance of major ports in India.
